Journal Four: first Callings reading response

In the book Callings one profile that I have enjoyed so far is the Street-Corner Astronomer.  Outer space is my first love.  I became attracted to all the beautiful sights that space has to offer and all the mystery that surrounds celestial objects.  The technological advancements made in telescopes in the the late 90’s and early 2000’s has made it possible to see further back in time than in any other period in human history.  The views that Hubble Space Telescope offers are like stepping back in time to view the cosmos as it was millions of years ago.  The images we receive today are so good that astronomers even 100 years ago could only dream of the picture quality.  I like the way Uncle Herman Heyn put it, “ If it looks fake, its in good focus” (Isay pg 14)  My vocabulary word is Astronomy.  Astronomy is the branch of science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole.

Two things that are a necessity from my future career are a fun and enjoyable work environment and enough money to provide for my family.  To expand on this, I have worked many jobs that I didn’t like at all.  To wake up everyday and hate the job that I have to go to to provide for my family is very tiring.  Then to top it all off, to have to work in an occupation that is unbearable for pennies on the dollar not even able to provide for your loved one on said salary makes the job even more unbearable.  To be able to go to a place you love and to get paid good enough to not worry about when I’m getting paid again would be a godsend.  I want to know what it feels like to be content with going to work, to actually be excited to have to wake up for work and to actually like my career.  Good pay is a secondary thought though.  Just having an enjoyable job would be enough for me.

  1. Clayton, I think your reflection on work purpose and pay is something millions, if not billions, of people can relate to. You use the word "godsend" to describe the feeling that might come if that can be achieved, and I concur with that diction choice. It does feel "God sent" when the miracle of the right job and calling come. And this is only my opinion of course, but I believe that's exactly what it is.
